Sara is in the garden. It is a sunny day. There is a big tree. The tree has apples.

Sara looks up. She sees something new. It is red. It is round. It is on the tree.

Sara says, "What is this?"

"It is an apple!" she says. Sara counts the apples. "One, two, three," she says. She sees three red apples.

Sara looks again. She sees more apples. They are green. "What is this?" she says.

"They are green apples!" she says. Sara counts them too. "One, two," she says. "Two green apples."

Sara has a basket. She wants to pick apples. She picks the first apple. "One apple," she says. She puts it in the basket.

She picks a second apple. "Two apples," she says. She picks a third apple. "Three apples," she says.

Dad comes into the garden. "Hello, Sara! What do you have?" he asks.

Sara shows him the basket. "I have three apples!" she says. "One, two, three."

Dad smiles. "Good counting, Sara!" He picks two more apples and puts them in the basket. "Now how many?" he asks.

Sara counts again. "One, two, three, four, five," she says. "Five apples!"

Sara sees a small bird near the tree. "What is this?" she says.

"It is a bird!" she says. The bird has red feathers. One bird. Sara waves at the bird. The bird flies away.

Sara and Dad walk into the house. Sara carries the basket. "Five apples," she says again. She is proud.

Mom is in the kitchen. "Look, Mom!" Sara says. "Five apples. One, two, three, four, five."

"Wonderful counting!" Mom says. "Let's make apple juice."

Sara helps Mom. She feels happy. Today she counted apples. Today she saw a bird. It was a good day in the garden.
